Careers in Social Justice

Wednesday March 28, 2012

Did you come to law school to help people and effect change? Are you not sure that the large/corporate law firm environment is the right career for you? Then this event is for you! The Career Services Office is pleased to announce that we are hosting a social justice careers event next Thursday, March 29th at 3:30 -5:00 pm in Room 2A. The event is a panel with four lawyers from different social justice/public interest backgrounds talking about their careers and providing advice to students who are thinking of similar career paths. We are very pleased that the following panelists have confirmed their attendance:

  • Nathalie Des Rosiers, Canadian Civil Liberties Association (Toronto)
  • Michel DesNeiges, New Brunswick Environmental Law Society and Environmental Law Clinic (Moncton)
  • LA Henry, sole practitioner and Fredericton Legal Advice Clinic (Fredericton)
  • Tom Mann, NB Union of Public and Private Employees (Fredericton)
Each panelist will speak briefly about his or her experience in social justice and then we will open up the discussion to questions from the floor – so be thinking about what sorts of questions you would like to ask the panelists. There will be a light reception in the Student Lounge following the panel.

As well, in conjunction with the Social Justice Panel, the CSO is partnering with Speaker’s Hour to host Nathalie Des Rosiers over Speaker’s Hour on the 29th. I will circulate the title of Ms. Des Rosiers’ presentation in the next few days, but I wanted to send this email out now so that you can “save the date”. We are very excited about the line up for this year’s event and know that it is going to be interesting and informative. I encourage all students to attend.

Introducing: Women & the Law, a new student society at UNB Law

Sunday March 18, 2012

Introducing: Women & the Law, a new student society at UNB Law

Presenting: Miss Representation

According to their website, this documentary “exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself.”

To view the film trailer, visit: www.missrepresentation.org/the-film/

Join us next Thursday evening, March 22 in Room 2A at 7 p.m. to watch the film and hear about our plans for the new society that will hit the ground running in Fall 2012. Admission is free and light snacks will be provided.

Please RSVP by “liking” this post so we can make sure to have enough snacks. Everyone is welcome!

PhD Opportunity in London! Check out the information below!

Friday February 24, 2012

Jason Chuah of City Law School, is very interested in attracting more Canadian students to study at City Law School in London. (Already, the university’s 2-year LLB program for BA graduates attracts quite a number.)

Jason has forwarded me the following information about full PhD scholarships being offered by City University to new PhD students in law (full details and hyperlink in Jason’s email below), and asked if I could help circulate this information back in Canada.

The rather generous scholarship consist of:

·         an annual bursary (£15,500 in 2012/13 and expected to rise in line with inflation in subsequent years);
·         a full tuition fee waiver;
·         a one-off allowance of £1,000 which may be used across the three-year period of the studentship to support research needs such as specialist training, equipment or conference attendance.

The deadline is coming up rather quickly (March 9th), but Jason would be very happy to discuss individual student proposals.

Have you considered working for the UNB Law Journal?

Monday February 20, 2012

Dear Law Students,

The UNB Law Journal is now hiring for the 2012-2013 academic year. We are
looking for four Associate Editors and two Editors-in-Chief. We encourage
you all to apply.

Working on the Journal looks great on a resume and is a great talking point
in interviews. Plus, it’s a lot of fun and a nice change from taking class
for credit.

Editors are not paid but earn 3 credit-hours for their work on the Journal.
Although some work may start in September 2012 or earlier, credit is earned
in the January-April semester.

If you are interested in applying, please send a resume, brief cover letter
and a writing sample to unblj@unb.ca by Monday, March 12.
Interviews will take place shortly after this deadline.

If you have any questions or concerns at all, please do not hesitate to
contact us at any time. Looking forward to hearing from you,

Kathleen MacDougall and Meghan Howlett
Co-Editors-in-Chief
